Linear welding and fabrication covers a specific set of repairs: cracked gate frame joints, broken hinge brackets that need a weld rather than a bolt, snapped slide-gate guide channels, and bent operator mounting plates. In Tampa, a typical Linear gate welding repair runs between $220 and $480 installed, depending on whether we’re reinforcing an existing weld or cutting and fabricating a replacement bracket from scratch. We carry steel stock, plate, and tube on the truck most weeks, so the job often gets done same day. Most owners find out something’s wrong the same way: the gate starts dragging, bangs against the post, or the opener strains and buzzes while the panel sits cocked a few inches off level. Cody Beckman has been straightening out this exact mess in Tampa for years, and he’ll tell you what the gate is doing before he tells you what it needs. We’re an independent gate specialist, not affiliated with Linear, but we’ve worked on enough Linear operators and gates that we know their mounting geometry and bracket weak points cold.

Which Linear Models This Applies To
Linear’s residential lineup splits into two worlds: swing gate openers like the linear actuator driven LS series, and slide gate openers like the SL series with their chain-driven carriage boxes. The welding work differs between them. Swing gates tend to crack at the actuator mounting tabs and the top hinge plate, especially on heavier ornamental steel panels. Slide gates fail at the rear guide track, the support wheels, and the chain tension bracket. Linear also markets its openers as paired kits with steel gate panels, and those panel frames are exactly the ones we’re welding back together in Tampa driveways.
The Compatibility Gotcha: A Linear LS Linear actuator mount that fit the 2012 generation gate frame often doesn’t line up on the newer steel kits without a spacer plate. The bolt pattern changed about half an inch. If someone just bolts the operator to the new gate without the adapter, the actuator rod runs off-angle and dies in about two years. We keep those adapter plates on the truck in Tampa because it’s a mistake we see at least twice a month.
On the repair strategy: a bent OEM Linear bracket can sometimes be heated, straightened, and reinforced. But if the bracket has cracked, an OEM replacement often cracks again in the same spot within two years because the base gauge hasn’t changed. We’ll fabricate a heavier replacement bracket, same mounting dimensions, from 1/4″ plate instead of the factory 3/16″, and it outlasts the OEM part in Florida humidity and salt air. If the rest of the gate structure is sound, the heavier aftermarket equivalent is usually the better call.

Signs Your Linear Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- The gate sags on the outer edge and drags the ground or pavement. The top hinge weld or the hinge plate itself has fatigued. In Tampa, Bayshore-adjacent hardware fails faster: salt air gets into micro-cracks and accelerates rust, so a hinge that looked fine last year becomes a gate that scrapes this year.
- The opener buzzes but the gate barely moves, or it shudders. A cracked actuator mount or a bent bracket is binding the operator. The motor still runs, but it’s fighting a lever arm that’s no longer straight. That strain shortens motor life significantly.
- You hear a sharp metallic clank when the gate starts or stops. A weld joint has broken and the pieces shift under load before banging together. This is steel telling you it’s done.
- Fresh orange-brown rust streaks appear at a weld or bracket edge. The base metal is oxidizing from the inside of the weld. Tamping it down with paint won’t stop it; the weld is compromised.
- The chain tension keeps loosening on a slide gate. The rear chain bracket or tension plate is flexing, and the chain stretches faster than it should. You’ll tighten it, and a week later it’s slack again. The bracket needs welding or replacement.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a Tampa Linear gate, welding and fabrication jobs usually break down like this:
- Weld repair on a cracked gate frame or hinge: $220 – $340, depending on weld length and whether we need to reinforce the back side with plate steel.
- Fabricate and install a custom bracket: $300 – $480, materials included. We cut, drill, grind, weld, and primer-coat it before it goes back on the gate.
- Reinforce a failing OEM operator mount: $250 – $350, with plate steel shaped and welded to the existing structure.
The range exists because of metal thickness, weld position (overhead is slower), and whether the gate has to come off its hinges. We write the exact number down before any work starts, every single visit, and there’s no pressure to accept. That written price includes the materials, the weld time, grinding and finish work, and a reinforcement strategy where it makes sense. The work itself is backed by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the weld or fabrication isn’t right, we make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
You can inspect a Linear gate safely: look for visible cracks at weld points, rust stains, and whether the gate level changes when it opens. But welding steel gate frames is not a do-it-yourself repair. A bad weld on a gate hinge or actuator mount can let a several-hundred-pound panel drop on a child, a pet, or a car, and welding near an electric operator means you’re working within inches of live wiring and high-tension chain drives. When the structure of the gate is compromised, that’s the line where a trained technician replaces a homeowner. Our welders are background-checked and uniformed, and they’ll lay drop cloths and wear shoe covers if the job takes them inside the house (it usually doesn’t, but the routine never changes). FAQs
A properly done weld on a Linear gate frame or bracket should last 10 to 15 years in Tampa, provided the base metal wasn’t too far gone when we started. Salt air near the water shortens that if the gate isn’t protected. We clean the area back to bare steel, use the right filler rod for the metal gauge, and primer-coat the repair. Call (850) 789-6299 and we’ll quote your exact gate, for free.
Sometimes, yes. A single crack in a thick bracket can be ground out, welded, and often reinforced with a small backer plate. If the metal is thin, rusted through, or has multiple cracks, replacement or custom fabrication is the better call. Most standard bracket replacements on a linear arm run between $220 and $340 installed in Tampa, and you’ll see the exact number in writing before we touch anything.
Most single-bracket or single-weld repairs take 1 to 2 hours on site, including grinding, welding, and finish coating. A full gate-frame fabrication can run half a day. We’ll give you a window when you call, and if your gate is stuck open or closed, we can often get to it the same day in the Tampa area.
We stock steel plate, tube, and bar stock, plus common adapter plates, hinge blanks, and slide-gate bracket hardware for Linear, LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls gates. That means we can fabricate and fit most replacements in one visit without waiting on a supplier. Call (850) 789-6299 to confirm before we head out, and we’ll tell you exactly what’s on the truck today.
