We repair and replace LiftMaster keypads and intercoms throughout Tampa, typically for $140 to $320 installed depending on whether you need a wireless keypad, a hardwired intercom module, or a full video intercom swap. Most jobs take under an hour once we’re on site, and our trucks carry the common LiftMaster parts so you’re not waiting on a shipment. The way most Tampa homeowners find out they need us is simple: the keypad stops accepting the code you’ve used for years, or the intercom crackles, goes quiet, or rings through with no voice on the line.

If your LiftMaster keypad works sometimes and not others, or the intercom buzzes when someone presses the call button but you can’t hear them, that’s the part we’re writing about here. No sugarcoating, no fluff: the guts of the keypad wear out from humidity and sun, and the intercom boards corrode faster in Tampa’s salt air than the manuals ever admit.
Which LiftMaster Models This Applies To
LiftMaster made a handful of keypad and intercom configurations across their gate and garage lines, and the keypad from one series usually will not talk to the operator from another without a compatibility bridge. The most common ones we see in Tampa driveways are the LiftMaster 877MAX wireless keypad, the older 387LM and 877LM models, and the wired telephone-entry intercom modules used on LiftMaster LA400 and LA500 gate operators. Before you order anything online, look at the back of your existing keypad or the side of the intercom housing. There’s a model sticker there. The 877MAX runs on a 3V coin battery and programs with the yellow “learn” button on the operator. The older 387LM uses DIP switches. If you mix those up, the keypad won’t pair, and you’ll assume the part is dead when it isn’t.
For OEM versus aftermarket: genuine LiftMaster keypads and intercom boards cost more, and for the keypad specifically, the genuine part is worth the extra money. The aftermarket wireless keypads often don’t have the same weather gasket fit, which matters in Tampa when a summer storm dumps two inches of rain on an exposed gate post. For intercom boards, we stock both OEM and a few quality aftermarket equivalents, and we’ll give you a straight answer on which one makes sense for your operator’s age.

Signs Your LiftMaster Keypad & Intercom Is Failing
- Keypad works in the morning but not in the afternoon. The membrane or circuit board underneath is expanding in the heat, breaking contact. Tampa sun bakes these surface-mounted keypads to 130 degrees or more in summer. The part is failing even when it still works.
- You have to press each button two or three times, hard. The conductive pad under the buttons is worn out. No amount of pressing harder fixes it; the keypad needs a new contact layer or a full replacement.
- Intercom rings but you can’t hear anyone, or they can’t hear you. The speaker or microphone has corroded, usually after a few years of humid air working its way past the faceplate seal. We see this all over the Bayshore Boulevard area, where salt air accelerates the corrosion on outdoor intercoms.
- Gate opens on its own, or the intercom unlocks the gate without anyone pressing anything. That’s a failing relay or a short in the intercom’s control board. This one deserves your attention, because the gate may open when you’re not expecting visitors.
- The keypad lights up but the operator never activates. The radio transmitter in the keypad has stopped talking to the receiver. Sometimes reprogramming fixes it; usually, on a keypad older than about four years in Florida weather, the transmitter is done.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s the honest range for LiftMaster keypad and intercom work in Tampa:
| Repair/Replacement | Typical Installed Price in Tampa |
|---|---|
| Wireless keypad (877MAX or 387LM) | $140 – $190 |
| Wired intercom handset or speaker module | $180 – $260 |
| Intercom control board (OEM) | $220 – $320 |
| Troubleshoot/reprogram existing keypad | $85 – $120 |
Every one of those prices includes the part, the labor, the programming, and testing the full open-close cycle before we leave. The range exists because a 10-year-old LiftMaster LA400 might need a different board revision than the one installed last year, and we won’t know until we see the box. What you’ll never get is a surprise. The written price comes before any work begins, every single visit. If we open the enclosure and find a simpler fix than we quoted, you pay the lower amount and we tell you the difference.
The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the repair. If the keypad or intercom fails within a year of our work, we make it right. No argument, no fine print. That’s how Cody Beckman has run this shop since the beginning, and it’s not changing.
DIY or Call Us?
There are exactly two things worth trying yourself before you call, and both are safe. First, swap the keypad battery. A 3V CR2032 solves more “dead keypad” calls than we can count. Second, if your intercom is powered through a low-voltage transformer, check that the breaker or GFCI outlet feeding it hasn’t tripped during a storm. Tampa lightning knocks out more intercom power supplies than actual intercoms. Those two checks take five minutes and cost nothing.
Past that, we’d rather you didn’t open the intercom enclosure yourself. The control board carries low-voltage wiring that runs back to your operator, and crossing a wire or grounding a terminal can fry the operator’s main board, which turns a $180 intercom swap into a $500 operator repair. LiftMaster intercom and keypad repair is honestly low-risk compared to high-tension springs, but there’s a right way to test voltage and match wiring, and we do it every week. If you’re not certain, call us at (850) 789-6299. We’ll tell you over the phone whether it’s a battery, a setting, or a real repair. Tell me what the gate is doing, and I’ll tell you exactly what it needs.
FAQs
Expect four to seven years out of a wireless keypad and five to eight years out of an intercom module in Tampa’s humid, salty climate. That’s notably shorter than the same parts in drier inland markets. If your LiftMaster keypad is older than six years and starting to flake, replacement is the practical route.
Sometimes, and it depends on the failure. A worn battery contact or corroded terminal can often be cleaned and repaired for less than a full swap. A cracked keypad membrane or a corroded intercom board usually means replacement, because rebuilding those parts costs more in labor than the new part does. We’ll tell you honestly which side of the line your part falls on.
A keypad swap takes about 30 to 45 minutes including programming and a full open-close test. An intercom module or control board replacement usually runs 60 to 90 minutes. You’ll have a working gate the same day we arrive.
