BFT Access Control Installation: The Tampa Owner’s Guide

Most BFT access control installations in Tampa run between $950 and $2,400 installed, depending on the model and how much wiring your gate already has in place. We stock the common BFT readers, keypads, and control boards on the truck, so many jobs finish the same day we show up. Owners usually call us after the keypad stops reading codes, the gate ignores the remote, or the system works fine for three years and then quits after a Tampa thunderstorm rolls through. If that sounds familiar, here’s what actually needs to happen.

We’re an independent gate repair company, not a BFT dealership. That matters because we aren’t pushed to sell you a whole new panel when the problem is a $180 receiver board. Cody Beckman and our Tampa crew have worked on enough BFT setups along Bayshore Boulevard and up through Westchase to know exactly which boards fail first, which readers survive Florida humidity, and which aftermarket parts are worth your money.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT’s U.S. residential line breaks into three families: the Deimos series (swing gate operators), the Rigel series (slide gate operators), and the Phobos line (solar-friendly light operators). Your access control hardware usually isn’t the operator itself, it’s the add-on keypad, card reader, or receiver board that tells the operator when to open. The most common BFT access components we replace in Tampa are the BFT MITTO remote kits, the BFT ALKOR keypad, and the BFT RIGEL control board.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most owners hit: BFT changed their receiver frequency from 433.92 MHz to 868 MHz on some newer models, and the old MITTO transmitters won’t talk to the new boards. If your remote worked for years and then suddenly nothing, before you blame the remote, check the board’s date code. We keep both frequencies in the truck because Tampa neighborhoods have both generations installed, sometimes on the same street.

As for OEM versus aftermarket: BFT’s genuine parts are well-built, but some are painfully slow to source from Italy. For common items like the ALKOR keypad, we recommend OEM because the wiring pinout is subtle and aftermarket copies sometimes drop a wire. For receiver boards, there are quality aftermarket options that match the original spec at a lower price, and we’re honest about which ones have held up in Florida’s salt air and which ones we no longer install.

Signs Your BFT Access Control Installation Is Failing

  • Keypad lights up but won’t accept codes. The membrane on BFT keypads wears out from direct sun and rain exposure, which Tampa delivers in equal measure. The keypad looks fine, but the internal contacts have corroded. We see this constantly on west-facing gates in Carrollwood and South Tampa.
  • Gate opens intermittently, then not at all. This usually points to a failing relay on the control board or a loose connection where the access wiring enters the operator housing. Florida’s daily heat cycles expand and contract every terminal screw until something loosens just enough.
  • Remote range shrinks to a few feet. On BFT systems, this is often water intrusion in the receiver antenna connection. It happens after heavy rain when the housing seal is aging. You’ll notice it works better on dry days, which tells you the board is still alive but the antenna is grounding out.
  • Gate opens but won’t close automatically. The access system’s safety sensor loop has gone open, so the board thinks something is in the way. This is more often a wiring fault than a bad sensor, and tracing it takes a multimeter and patience.
  • You hear a click but nothing moves. The access panel is sending the signal, and the board is receiving it, but the motor capacitor has given up. On older BFT operators, this capacitor sits right next to the board and absorbs years of Florida heat until it swells and quits.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

BFT Access Component Typical Installed Price in Tampa
ALKOR keypad replacement $280 – $460
MITTO remote kit (2 transmitters + receiver) $320 – $520
RIGEL control board replacement $520 – $900
Full access control package (keypad, receiver, wiring harness, programming) $950 – $2,400

Those ranges include the part, the labor to remove the old component and wire in the new one, programming, and cleanup. Your exact number depends on your operator’s age, whether we’re replacing one component or rebuilding the access chain, and how much of the existing wiring is still sound. We write the price down before we touch anything, and that’s the price you pay. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise covers every BFT access installation we do, and the warranty on the part itself runs through the manufacturer’s standard terms.

DIY or Call Us?

Access control work is low-voltage, so it doesn’t carry the same risk as high-tension gate springs or a live 120-volt motor feed. That said, the honest truth is that most DIY BFT repairs go wrong at the programming stage, not the wiring. BFT logic boards use a sequence of dips and jumpers that isn’t intuitive, and one wrong setting can leave your gate dead in the open position overnight. Not a safety hazard in the same way a broken spring is, but it means your house is wide open until someone fixes it. If you want to try something yourself, the only check we’d suggest is reseating loose wire terminals with the power off. Anything past that, call (850) 789-6299 and we’ll send someone who has done it a hundred times.
